Frequently Asked Questions – HID pivCLASS R40 Reader

Quick answers to common questions about the HID pivCLASS R40 Reader, its specifications, compatibility, and use in access control systems.

Q. What is the HID pivCLASS R40 reader used for?
The R40 is a wall-switch (single-gang) contactless reader used at FIPS 201 Controlled access doors where a larger surface with a visible LED access-grant / access-deny indicator is preferred over a slim mullion reader.
Q. What is the typical read range of the HID R40?
Typical maximum read range is up to 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) for ISO 14443 A cards. Actual range varies with installation surface, electrical noise, and the specific credential used.
Q. Does the HID pivCLASS R40 have a keypad?
No. The R40 is the reader-only variant. If a PIN keypad is required, look at the HID pivCLASS RK40 (wall-switch with keypad) or RKCL40 (with keypad and contact slot).
Q. Can the HID R40 reader use OSDP?
The R40 supports Wiegand mode for standard panels and HID pivCLASS protocol (or CoreStreet Reader Protocol) in PAM mode. OSDP is typically supported on the iCLASS SE / multiCLASS SE families - confirm the latest firmware with HID for OSDP capability.
Q. What is the warranty period of the HID pivCLASS R40?
HID Global provides a Lifetime warranty on the pivCLASS R40 reader against defects in materials and workmanship.
