Overview

What Is HID Employee Badge in Apple Wallet?

HID Employee Badge in Apple Wallet is a corporate access credential — powered by HID Seos technology — stored directly inside Apple Wallet on an iPhone or Apple Watch. It replaces the physical access card entirely, letting employees access their building, office floors, elevators, and amenity spaces with a simple tap of their iPhone or wrist.

What makes it unique is Express Mode — users don't need to wake their screen, enter a passcode, use Face ID, or open any app. The reader detects the badge automatically via Apple Enhanced Contactless Polling (ECP) as the user approaches. Access is granted in a single, natural motion.

Crucially, data linked to Employee Badge in Apple Wallet is never shared with Apple or stored on Apple servers. The credential is stored in the iPhone's secure element hardware — Apple acts only as the delivery mechanism, not the custodian of credentials.

Express Mode & Power Reserve — What They Mean

⚡
Express Mode

Open Doors Without Unlocking Your Phone

With Express Mode enabled for the Employee Badge, the user does not need to wake the screen, unlock the device, use Face ID, Touch ID, or open any app. Apple's ECP (Enhanced Contactless Polling) protocol continuously broadcasts a low-power signal from the iPhone. When an HID Signo reader detects this signal, it authenticates the Seos credential immediately.

The result: the employee walks toward the door with their phone in their pocket or hand, and the door opens as they approach. The smoothest possible access experience — faster than tapping a physical card because there's no card to find.

Security note: Express Mode is configured per card type. If your organisation requires Face ID authentication before access (e.g. for high-security doors), Express Mode can be disabled for those doors while remaining active for standard areas.
🔋
Power Reserve

Access Works Even When the Battery Is Dead

Apple's Power Reserve feature keeps the Employee Badge in Apple Wallet active for approximately 5 hours after the iPhone battery reaches 0%. The iPhone screen goes dark and all other functions stop — but the NFC chip remains powered from the residual charge to serve Apple Wallet credentials.

For employees: no more being locked out because your phone died on the commute. For security administrators: a dead phone is no longer an access gap.

Apple Watch note: Apple Watch does not have Power Reserve for Apple Wallet credentials, but its battery typically lasts 18+ hours — making it a reliable backup credential device alongside the iPhone.

FAQ

HID Employee Badge in Apple Wallet — FAQ

HID Employee Badge in Apple Wallet is a corporate access credential powered by HID Seos technology and stored in Apple Wallet on iPhone or Apple Watch. Employees tap their device near a compatible HID Signo reader to open doors, elevators, and turnstiles. With Express Mode, no unlocking or app interaction is required. With Power Reserve, it continues working for approximately 5 hours after the iPhone battery reaches zero.
Express Mode is an Apple Wallet feature that allows the Employee Badge to work without any user interaction — no screen wake, no Face ID, no passcode, no app to open. The HID Signo reader uses Apple ECP (Enhanced Contactless Polling) to automatically detect the iPhone and authenticate the badge as the employee approaches the door. The result is frictionless access — the door opens in one natural movement.
Yes, via Apple's Power Reserve. When an iPhone's battery reaches 0% and the device powers off, selected cards in Apple Wallet remain active for approximately 5 additional hours. The NFC chip is powered by residual charge specifically to serve Apple Wallet credentials. The screen shows a "Low Power" message — employees can still tap in at HID Signo readers during this period.
All HID Signo readers (models 20, 20K, 40, 40K) natively support Employee Badge in Apple Wallet via Apple ECP. Compatible iCLASS SE readers with mobile upgrade capability also support Apple Wallet. All readers must be activated with the organisation's Mobile Keyset using HID Reader Manager before they can authenticate Apple Wallet credentials.
No. Data linked to Employee Badge in Apple Wallet is never shared with Apple or stored on Apple servers. The credential is stored securely in the iPhone's hardware secure element. Apple acts only as the provisioning and delivery mechanism — it never processes, reads, or retains the access credential. Privacy is maintained even from Apple itself.
Yes. HID Signo readers support both Apple Wallet (via ECP) and Google Wallet (via NFC) credentials simultaneously — the same reader handles iPhones, Android phones, and physical cards at the same door. This makes a multi-platform deployment seamless: iPhone users get Express Mode while Android users tap with Google Wallet. Both are managed from the same HID Origo portal.
Cybernetics Software (CSPL — Cybernetics Software Pvt. Ltd.) is an authorised HID NAS Partner in India. We handle the complete Apple Wallet credential deployment — HID Origo account setup, Signo reader activation with Mobile Keyset, SwiftConnect or Origo Bridge ACS integration, user provisioning, and license management.
